It has always been a conundrum among berry lovers when it comes to washing and storing them. There’s nothing more tragic than having to throw away an entire carton of berries you bought a couple of days back due to the villainous mould. Mould and moisture are archenemies of the berries. They find a way to crawl into your precious cargo and make it inedible! We’re here to give you some of our secret tips to protect berries from harm’s way.
1) Always buy fresh & tasty berries:
Getting fresh produce is the first step. Berries that are harvested prematurely or artificially ripened are no customer’s dream. But it’s hard to get your hands into the freshly plucked berries without emptying your pocket. We, FreshPick, pride ourselves in providing berries that are locally produced, affordable and freshly picked with the conviction of keeping you healthy.
2) Wash it the right way:
One of the rookie mistakes a berry enthusiastic can do is to wash them by holding them underneath running water. This pressure may squish and make them soggy. So what to do instead?
When it comes to extremely delicate berries such as blueberries and raspberries, it is always better to store them in original packaging and hold off on washing until you’re ready to eat them. For strawberries and other firm ones, the trick is to use the aid of white vinegar. Keep them in a bowl, a huge one to avoid stacking up one on another, and pour a mixture of water and vinegar (3:1) and let it soak for 5-8 minutes. Keeping it longer may cause them to absorb the vinegar. Once it’s soaked, wash it until the trace of vinegar aroma is gone. This little trick washes away the mould and increases the shelf life of berries.
3) Tip to store berries to keep them fresh longer:
Dry the berries and use an airtight clean container with paper towel-lined to keep them fresh longer. You can also prefer to keep the lid ajar to evaporate the condensation.
Taking out the very mould ones may help to stop mould from spreading to other berries. Buying our fresh hand-picked berries definitely save you time effort and money. The next time you buy your favourite berries, use these manoeuvres and let us know how it turned out.
